5,000 signatures call for figures on water payment

A petition is being handed into Irish Water's head office this morning, asking the company to reveal how many people have paid their bills.

5,000 signatures have been collected since last Friday, by members of the Anti-Austerity Alliance.

"I think the reason Irish Water isn't releasing them is contained in their answer - that it's not 'helpful' to do so," said Socialist Party TD and member of the AAA Paul Murphy.

"I think it wouldn't' be helpful for the Government or Irish Water to release the figures, because I'd say the payment levels are on the floor."

He said the petition demanded the release of the figures after 700,000 bills had passed their payment date.

"We think people have a right to know," he said, saying both Irish Water and the government had widely publicised registration figures when it suited them.
