Some 45 jobs will be lost in Newcastle West after the decision by the Garvey Group to close the town's Supervalu store, it has emerged today.
According to a statement on behalf of the company this afternoon, the store will cease trading on Saturday, April 25 "due to difficult trading conditions".
"This is a difficult time for employees and we are committed to supporting them where possible in securing alternative employment," the statement read.
"A redundancy package, along with CV and interview training, will be offered to all staff. They will also be informed of potential redeployment options within the Garvey Group."
The store employs 11 full-time staff and 34 part-time staff and is regarded as one of the town's largest employers.
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Collins described the closure as "devastating news for Newcastle West and the greater West Limerick area".
"It's a huge blow to the staff, the management, and the company itself. You'd have to take time out to think of the local suppliers that feed into Garveys as well," he added.
The Garvey Group also operate a Centra store in the town.
"I just want to acknowledge that Garvey's Supervalu and the management of the shop have been very supportive of local sporting organisations and charities, through sponsorship, and have been a lot better than other businesses in the area," Cllr Collins added.
"At any stage whenever they were approached they were always giving.
"They were a great business for employment and supporting local people."
