Nearly 40 small schools – including 11 in Mayo – are to lose a teacher in September.
The news came as a response from the Minister of Education, Ruairi Quinn, to a question from TD Éamon Ó Cuív. Seven schools in Galway will also lose a teacher.
From September, a school will need at least 20 pupils to keep two teachers. The cost-saving measure has been in place for a number of years, with the two-teacher threshold rising from 14 students in 2011.
The
carries comment this morning from the Irish National Teachers Organisation, which said this was fundamentally unfair to small rural communities.
