40 small schools to lose their second teacher in September

Nearly 40 small schools – including 11 in Mayo – are to lose a teacher in September.

The news came as a response from the Minister of Education, Ruairi Quinn, to a question from TD Éamon Ó Cuív. Seven schools in Galway will also lose a teacher.

From September, a school will need at least 20 pupils to keep two teachers. The cost-saving measure has been in place for a number of years, with the two-teacher threshold rising from 14 students in 2011.

The Irish Independent carries comment this morning from the Irish National Teachers Organisation, which said this was fundamentally unfair to small rural communities.
