Meanwhile in Waterford, pet retailer Maxi Zoo is to create 15 new jobs with the opening today of its first store in the south-east.

The new 8,000 square foot store is located at the Butlersland Retail Park on the Cork Road in Waterford.

The Maxi Zoo pet store chain already includes 11 stores acrosss counties Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Wicklow, Limerick and Longford.

The business was founded by husband and wife team Tony and Alice Cross and opened its first store in Ballincollig in 2006.

It now employs 90 people and is planning to create hundreds of new jobs by opening another 30 pet stores over the next five years as it seeks to capitalise on a market worth an estimated €200m.

“The business is part of the Fressnapf Group which is Europe’s number one pet retailer with over 1,294 stores across Europe and the finance is already in place to facilitate our expansion,” said Tony Cross.

Maxi Zoo has already identified a number of other locations for stores and the speed at which it can open these stores is now dependent on identifying premises that meet its rental and operational criteria.

“We see no reason why we can not open up to six stores a year if the conditions are right. The pet market in Ireland is worth an estimated €200m per annum,” said Tony.
