A 25-year-old man is recovering in hospital after he was knocked by a rogue wave in Co Clare this afternoon, writes Patrick Flynn.

The American tourist was standing on the shoreline at Doolin Point with his wife when he was swept off his feet.

The man was tossed onto rocks resulting in multiple injuries. The man's wife escaped injury.

The alarm was raised at around 4.00pm and the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue sub centre alerted the Doolin unit of the service.

Volunteers from the nearby Coast Guard station made their way to the scene where they located the injured man.

The casualty was assessed and stabilised by first responders before being stretchered over 500 metres to a carpark where an ambulance was waiting.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
