President Higgins says he'll use the year 2014 to try and transform Ireland's ethics.
In his Christmas message, President Higgins has sent special good wishes to those who won't be spending Christmas at home.
He says one of the highlights of his presidency so far has been a series of public meetings with Ireland's young people – and said he would like to hold similar events next to try and help Ireland overcome its recent past.
"During 2014, I will be encouraging the widest possible discussion of ethics in every aspect of our lives, nationally and globally," he said.
"This will, I hope, make a contribution to us moving beyond a version of our society and economy that has brought so much hardship, required so much sacrifice."
