€200m data centre plan 'a major boost for Cork' that will create 150 jobs

Cork has received a major boost with the announcement of a €200m investment for the region.

Commercial property group JCD confirmed their plans to build a number of data centres on the outskirts of the city on a 32-acre site.

The centres are planned as part of the redevelopment of the former Mitsui Denman site in Little Island.

The development will create 150 new jobs and hundreds more during the construction phase.

Subject to receiving satisfactory planning permission, the company intends to start site works immediately with a view to delivering the first data centre by mid-2017.

Cork City Fianna Fáil Councillor Ken O'Flynn said the news was a huge boost.

"It's a major coup for Cork," he said. "Cork City Council and Cork County Council have been working hard together for the past number of years to attract major investment into the region."

Cork Chamber chief executive Conor Healy said: "Cork’s infrastructure will be significantly enhanced as a result of this planned development and will position this region in particular to grow the information and communications technology, financial services and digital sectors for years to come.

"Data centre provision in Cork is required to underpin the continued growth of the tech market and to meet demands, which continue to grow exponentially."
