20 priests to offer absolution in Shannon shopping centre

Customers in Shannon Town can get a little extra with their Christmas gifts, as priests will be offering confessions in the local shopping centre.

Twenty priests will be at the Skycourt Shopping Centre on December 8 between 1pm and 6pm to offer absolution.

The manager of the shopping centre said he jumped on the idea because it meant shoppers could have a chat with a priest in a neutral environment where they felt comfortable.

Organiser Fr Tom Ryan said: "It's in response to the Year of Mercy. The Pope has asked us to look at different ways of proclaiming the Gospel.

"We in the parish of Shannon approached the management of Skycourt with the idea that we would make ourselves available on December 8, when the Year of Mercy begins."

Shoppers will be invited to sit down for "a confession, a chat, a prayer or a blessing", he added.
