Just under 700 people were arrested for suspected drink-driving over Christmas.

Just under 700 people were arrested for suspected drink-driving over Christmas.

Garda figures for their dedicated 35-day enforcement campaign over Christmas shows that more than 36,000 drivers were breath-tested during that time.

Thirteen of those were arrested were detained on Christmas Day.

The figures also show 17 people lost their lives on the roads between December 1 and January 4.

Key points:

- 17 people lost their lives - four drivers, two passengers, seven pedestrians, one cyclist and three motorcyclists;

- 20 people were arrested on average each day (696 total) on suspicion of driving under the influence;

- 13 were people arrested on Christmas Day and 44 people on New Year’s Day on suspicion of drink-driving;

- 36,000 people breath-tested at more than 7,500 checkpoints.
