166,000 new applications were made last year for Irish residency, citizenship, asylum and other visas to live in the state.

The Justice Minister has just published the annual review of immigration activity.

It reveals that in 2013 there were 97,000 new or renewed registrations for permission to remain in Ireland, a further 95,000 new visa applications were made, and 91% of those were approved.

The top three nationalities applying for visas were India at 16%, Russia at 15%, and China at 11%.

Over 30,000 applications for Irish citizenship were also decided last year with 18 citizenship ceremonies held during 2013.
