100,000 expected at nationwide water protests

More than 90 separate demonstrations will take place across the country today - as over 100,000 people take to the streets in protest against water charges.

The Right 2 Water campaign will today stage the largest public demonstration in the lifetime of this Government.

In the past few months, Irish Water staff have been driven out of residential areas right across the country while attempting to install meters.

The first of the rallies will get underway from 11am this morning, with a full list of demonstrations available on right2water.ie.

In Dublin, delays are likely around the city centre as a result of the demonstrations.

The planned route is scheduled to depart Fairview Park at 1pm and make its way to Beresford Place where demonstrators will cross onto the North Quays and then march as far as Bachelors Walk and then to the GPO on O'Connell St.

A rally at the Five Lamps on North Strand will kick off from midday. Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou Mc Donald is among those expected to attend.

Meanwhile, the Cork City Right 2 Water protest is denying any political party an opportunity to speak at today's rally. The march will get underway from 2pm at the Library on Grand Parade.

Organisers of the "Right to Water" march in Waterford say people simply can't afford to pay. The demonstration there will kick off in Ballybricken from 2pm.

In Limerick city, the demonstration will begin at 2pm from Bedford Row.
