10,000 march in Melbourne to remember Jill Meagher

In Australia, more than 10,000 people have marched in Melbourne to pay their respects to murdered Irishwoman Jill Meagher.

The 29-year-old from Drogheda was raped and murdered in the suburb town of Brunswick. Her body was found in a shallow grave last week.

Thousands gathered, holding flowers, photos of Jill and placards as they walked along the same street where Jill was last seen alive last weekend.

The marchers said they had come joined in grief and say more needs to be done to protect the local community.

"We're shattered by what has happened…It could have happened to anybody, " said one woman.

A man who took part in the march said: "I'm worried about my kids. I'm sending a message to the authorities - get tough on this. We've had enough of it."

Jill Meagher had gone missing on her way home from a work night out in the suburb of Brunswick on Friday, September 21.

Her body was found in a shallow grave on Thursday, 50 kilometres away from where she was last seen in Brunswick.

Forty-one-year-old Adrian Ernest Bayley has been charged with her rape and murder. He is due before court again in January.

Pictures from the march can be seen on theage.com.
