Young cast show stunning form

EVER since Deliverance I have always been suspicious whenever film characters decide to take a boat trip. And when these are youngsters who take a bully on board to teach him a lesson, well, my antennae goes up.

Jacob Aaron Estes’ Mean Creek (Tartan) makes waves thanks to some excellent direction and writing (also from Estes), and fine performances from a young cast.

Sam (Rory Culkin) is the victim of an overweight bully George (an excellent Joshua Peck), who takes up an offer of a boat trip, little suspecting that the intentions are strictly revengeful. The tension builds nicely, but you are drawn into the plot before the rivetting climax.

An audio commentary with director and cast is a fine extra, as is the interview with Estes.

Drama

Star Rating: 4/5.
