Tupac has been named as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees

The list of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations was announced today and included a couple of surprises, including Tupac and Janet Jackson.

A panel of over 800 artists, historians and other music industry members will vote on the shortlist, considering the musical influence of the artist or band, the length and depth of their career and their body of work.

Those inducted will join the likes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones (The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)

Fans will also be encouraged to take part, with their top five artists being tallied alongside the other ballots to decide which five of the 19 will be inducted.

To be eligible, an artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years before the nomination year. For 2017′s nominations that year is 1991.

Tupac’s illustrious career was cut short by his death in 1996 (The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)

Tupac’s inclusion on the list follows on from N.W.A’s induction in 2016′s roll call, signalling a clear move to recognise hip-hop in the Hall of Fame.

Here’s the full list of nominees:

Bad Brains
The Cars
Chaka Khan
Depeche Mode
Electric Light Orchestra
J Geils Band
Jane’s Addiction
Janet Jackson
Joan Baez
Joe Tex
Pearl Jam
Tupac Shakur
The Zombies

You can take part and vote for five of your favourites here before December 5.
