‘The Merry Gentleman’ a passable directorial debut for Keaton

03/12/2009 - 15:17:56
Director: Michael Keaton

Cast: Michael Keaton, Bobby Canavale, Kelly MacDonald, Tom Bastounes

Keaton makes his directing debut with what is, at best, an indifferent thriller whose only strength lies in it being character driven rather than plot driven.

Keaton plays a hit-man who attempts suicide– another angst-ridden killer – only to be rescued by a passing MacDonald, with whom he forms a romantic attachment.

They are both troubled souls and their link is further threatened when a cop (Bastounes) chasing the hit-man also falls for her vulnerable charms.

Keaton does well enough with the poor material – it offers nothing original to a well-trod path – and is left to wrestle with a decidedly downbeat plotline.

Star Rating: 3/5
