Green Party Senator Dan Boyle is hoping 'Britain's Got Talent' singing sensation Susan Boyle’s luck rubs off on him in the European election.
The Ireland South candidate revealed today that he and Susan are second cousins.
The Corkman heard of the family connection through his cousin, Eddie Boyle, after 47-year-old Susan shot to fame after wowing Simon Cowell.
“He talked about how his uncles emigrated to Scotland and that was where the link was. One of
them was Susan’s grandfather.”
Senator Boyle said that made them second cousins as his grandfather and Susan’s grandfather were brothers.
Dan is no stranger to the stage himself, as he appeared in 'Celebrity You're a Star' as part of
The Politicians. He reckons his talent came from his mother’s side — adding that the Boyles were all fine singers.
But the Cork Senator was quick to laugh off any suggestion that he has Susan’s musical talent,
saying his second cousin was “in a far different class”. And, he added, regarding her success: “If I
can get as many votes in the European election as the numbers that watch her on TV then I won’t b doing bad.”
Simon Cowell and the other judges didn’t think much of Susan when she took to the stage on the
show. But once she opened her mouth she had them and the viewers transfixed.
Since then she has clocked up over a million hits on YouTube and her appearance on 'Britain's Got Talent' is on track to becoming the most popular video on the site.
Dan’s father comes from Aranmore Island off the Donegal coast, and his grandfather’s clan come
from the mainland, from the same place as Packie Bonner.
“Who knows — we could be related too,” added Dan.
