Sunday’s TV tips

FILM: Where Eagles Dare (Channel 5, 6.05pm)

(1969) A US general with knowledge of the Allied plans for D-Day is captured by Nazi forces and taken to a heavily fortified fortress in the Alps.

In response, an elite team of British soldiers, and one American recruit, are sent on a mission to bring him home. But the task is made more difficult by a traitor in their midst.

This Alistair MacLean-penned Second World War drama is a well-paced, action-packed adventure of the old school variety.

The film never fails to deliver on everything one would expect to find in a war film, yet avoids becoming mired in cliches. The pairing of Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood is a masterstroke, and the score will stick in your head almost as long as the quotable dialogue.

Starring: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Patrick Wymark, Michael Hordern, Mary Ure

SPORT: Live Snooker: UK Championship (BBC2, 7pm)

The UK Championship has long been regarded as the second most prestigious ranking tournament on the snooker calendar, and the event reaches a conclusion this evening at the Barbican Centre in York with the second session of the final.

Mark Selby has been involved in the last two finals, and his appearance last year bucked a trend that has cursed the defending champions over the last decade.

The Jester from Leicester was the first holder to reach the final for a second successive year since Mark Williams in 2000, although his hopes of back-to-back triumphs were dashed by Neil Robertson, who became only the eighth player in history to win all of the Triple Crown events at least once.

Selby and Robertson started among the favourites once again, along with the likes of Ding Junhui and Ronnie O’Sullivan, with the players needing to reach 10 frames to claim the prestigious prize.

REALITY: I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here (3e, 9pm)

We’re now on the 14th series of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! so in theory, all the stars should have known what they were letting themselves in for when they signed up.

But after all the Bushtucker Trials, hungry nights, unlikely friendships and campsite personality clashes that make up an average series of I’m a Celeb, who found unexpected reserves of courage, humour and resilience, winning the public’s hearts in the process? And who just sat around moaning and causing rows?

Well, we’re about to find out, as the two men who always make the IACGMOOH experience look easy, Ant and Dec, reveal who has been crowned this year’s King or Queen of the Jungle.

Last year, there was an upset when the hotly tipped Joey Essex only finished fourth, behind Emmerdale’s Lucy Pargeter, fashion designer David Emanuel and winner, former Westlife singer Kian Egan, but are there any more shocks in store this time around?

FILM: Enemies Closer (Channel 5, 9pm)

(2013) A drug cartel under the control of sadistic leader Xander is desperate to locate a shipment of missing narcotics. Xander and his henchmen force Navy SEAL-turned-forest ranger Henry to aid the search or suffer dire consequences.

Henry’s sworn enemy, Clay, who wants revenge following a past dispute, turns up at this inopportune moment and he must decide if he is willing to bury the hatchet and help Henry to thwart Xander and his cronies.

Jean-Claude Van Damme and director Peter Hyams are a good team, as they proved with Timecop and Sudden Death. This high-octane action thriller could have done with a little more freshness in the originality department, but it’s worth one look.

Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Tom Everett Scott, Orlando Jones, Linzey Cocker, Christopher Robbie, Zahary Baharov

FILM: Sinister (Channel 4, 10pm)

(2012) Ten years after Kentucky Blood became a best-seller and brought him notoriety, novelist Ellison Oswalt moves to a leafy community with his wife Tracy and children Trevor and Ashley.

The father neglects to mention to his brood that the previous owners of the house came to an unfortunate end, and the sole survivor – a little girl - disappeared without trace.

In the attic, Ellison is intrigued to discover a box of Super 8 home movies. As he watches the shocking footage in the privacy of his office, the writer connects brutal murders across the country and senses a potential movie deal.

Strange symbols concealed within the footage lead Ellison to Professor Jonas, an expert on the occult.

As the writer continues to immerse himself in the case, he loosens his grasp on sanity.

Starring: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Michael Hall D’Addario, Clare Foley, Fred Dalton Thompson

MUSIC: Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways (BBC4, 10.25pm)

The Foo Fighters have plenty to celebrate – not only have they had 20 successful years in the business, but their current singles are still charting as highly as those did way back when.

Dave Grohl and his men have earned themselves a huge pat on the back.

However, in this eight-part series, they’ve been marking the occasion with something a little more memorable, documenting the recording odyssey behind their latest album, Sonic Highways.

The band has travelled the length and breadth of America, gleaning inspiration for that latest album and meeting the musicians who have helped shaped the country’s musical wealth.

Among others, they’ve so far visited Chicago and chronicled the city’s musical transitions and Washington DC, where Dave met up with Trouble Funk’s Big Tony Fish.

This may be the penultimate episode of this stunning series, but there’s still plenty more of the country’s music to go at...

DOCUMENTARY: The Moment of Truth (RTE One, 10.40pm)

Brian Hartnett is a DJ, who developed schizophrenia as a consequence of sustained drug use in his twenties. He started to hear voices in his head, often aggressive ones. But then, a new voice appeared which he believes to be Jesus.

Part of him knows that this is his “madness” talking, and yet he still finds this presence profoundly inspiring and positive. For him, the choice to listen to his voices, rather than trying to banish them, has helped him to reconcile his two conflicting worlds of psychosis and reality.

He now helps others do the same through the advocacy group he founded.
