Stars gather for 2012 Brit Awards

Chart-topping star Florence Welch showed she was also number one in the glamour stakes at the Brit Awards tonight as she became pop royalty in a dazzling gown.
The star showed it was Florence and the McQueen as she showed off a dress by Sarah Burton, who designed the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding gown.
Welch wore a textured peach dress with a lace train, cut to the thigh at the front with Indian hand jewellery and platform gladiator sandals, as she arrived at London’s O2 Arena for the pop world’s biggest night of the year.
The dress for the Florence + The Machine star is one of Alexander McQueen designer Burton’s first major outfits since last April’s royal celebration.
Also adding style to the red carpet this evening was Katie Melua who arrived with fiance James Toseland, the former World Superbike champion.
The 'Closest Thing To Crazy' singer – who only recently became engaged – wore a black Project D dress with a feathered jacket and Top Shop stilettos.
Many of the biggest names in music were gathering for tonight’s awards ceremony which will culminate in an outstanding contribution prize for Blur. But the band’s members did not look as though they had put as much thought into their outfits as the younger generation of stars.
Frontman Damon Albarn arrived wearing a flatcap, Harrington jacket and jeans, while guitarist Graham Coxon wore a faded denim jacket and shades. Even bass player Alex James managed to spoil the effect of his blue by wearing it with a T-shirt and mismatching buttons.
Nominees such as Ed Sheeran and Olly Murs graced the red carpet, along with Emeli Sande who already has the satisfaction of going home with one award tonight as the winner of the Critics’ Choice prize.
Other major names who were attending the event tonight included toughnut actor Ray Winstone, who arrived with his wife Elaine, while show host James Corden arrived wearing a smart black suit with slicked-back hair.
This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby arrived in a knee-length black dress with a plunging neckline.
British cycling glamour girl Victoria Pendleton was also among the guests wearing a zip-fronted white and flesh-coloured dress.
Another nominee, Jessie J, set pulses racing in a barely-there sheer scarlet dress. The star - who took last year's Critics' Choice prize - was clearly not too worried about the Price Tag of the floor-length designer gown after her number one success over the past 12 months.
Adele played it simple, wearing her signature black with a long dress and sheer sleeves. The singer ditched the mini-beehive she sported at last year’s event and let her hair down as she walked the red carpet.
The star is due to perform at tonight’s show, marking her first UK performance since vocal surgery restored her ailing voice. It was her appearance at the Brits last year, performing 'Someone Like You', which kick-started her career and put her on the road to global success.
International breakthrough artist nominee Lana Del Rey was another star who favoured red with an elegant, trailing off-the-shoulder dress.
Pop princess Kylie Minogue wore a vivid strapless blue dress, while current chart-topper Rita Ora was another who chose a long gown with a white number.
The musical who's-who of attendees also included Noel Gallagher - who is due to perform at the ceremony this evening - along with 2011 double winner Tinie Tempah and Elbow.
X Factor winners Little Mix and runner-up Marcus Collins were also at the show, as well as past contestants of the ITV1 series, One Direction.
US X Factor judge and former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger showed up in a jewelled and tightly bodiced floor-skimming dress.
Minogue said she had every confidence in James Corden’s abilities as the host of the awards. But she said the critics always loved to find something wrong with the performance of the presenter.
“With the Brits, they love to find something wrong, but he’ll be fine,” she said of Corden, with whom she hosted the awards in 2009, as she spoke to Sky News.
