Simon slams MTV
27/05/2006 - 16:13:14Paul Simon blames MTV for preventing many gifted musicians from enjoying successful careers, as he believes the influential pop channel places the focus on image instead of talent.
The veteran singer/songwriter, 64, insists he would never have made it in today's looks-obsessed climate.
He says: "In the 1960s you had to be a moron not to be successful in the music business.
"I was fortunate that it was the time I emerged. It's different today, a lot harder.
"It changed when record companies became corporate, and the corporations merged. There were five labels where there used to be 15, then the five became three.
"Then all the stations got bought up. That meant the end of the unusual hits.
"Everything became what the format dictated. MTV had a lot to do with it, because how telegenic you were mattered as much as how well you played and sang."
