Polanski treats the great Dickens classic with due respect in yet another outing for little Oliver (Clarke), Fagin (Kingsley) and the gang of Victorian pick-pockets.
It’s a stunning looking film; even if does look at times a trifle Victorian twee; and there is a pleasingly authentic feel to it. The playing is also beyond reproach.
In all respects, then, this is one of the best Twists to be put on screen. The trouble is you are always waiting for the cast to burst into song; what has been done so well before does leave a lasting impression.
