Monday’s TV tips

FILM: The Proposal (BBC Three, 8.15pm)

In the hallowed corridors of Ruick & Hunt Publishing, New York book editor Margaret Tate is feared by one and all including her long-suffering assistant Andrew.

The staff hate her, as does Andrew, but he suffers her mental abuse hoping that one day she might publish his debut novel.

In a shocking turn of events, Margaret is threatened with deportation to Canada so in order to stay in the country, she forces Andrew to marry her, on the understanding they can divorce once she has US citizenship.

As you may have guessed, the plan does not run smoothly.

There are bursts of hilarity as well as eye candy for both sexes. If you only see five minutes, don’t miss the male stripper routine. Sandra’s reactions are priceless.

In real life, Bullock is American and Reynolds is Canadian.

This was one of two Sandy films in 2009 that made more than 300million; the other was The Blind Side. However, her last film Gravity made more than those two combined,

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T Nelson, Betty White

SCIENCE: The Science Squad (RTÉ One, 8.30pm)

Aoibhinn meets Barbara Murphy, head of UCD spinout Equilume who has developed a light mask with tiny blue LED lights set into one of the eye cups of a pair of conventional blinkers routinely worn by horses.

The light limits the level of the hormone melatonin which is usually produced in darkness and inhibits the mare’s reproductive activity during winter months.

The weather is never far from the public consciousness; from what to wear when we leave the house each morning, to planning holidays abroad. But how has our weather changed over the last hundred years, and how will it change in the next?

What would happen if the world’s communications networks suddenly stopped working? They travel back to the 1960s, to a world before satellites and on the brink of the Cold War…

When YouTube was launched in 2005 surely nobody could have predicted its meteoric rise in popularity, influence and usage. In less than a decade, viewings of videos on the site have gone from 8 million views a day to a staggering 2 billion views, and the internet may well be reaching the capacity of being able to cope with its own success!

HEALTH: Doctor In The House (TV3, 9pm)

In this episode we meet Eileen Callaghan and her fiancé Peter Whelan, who live in Balbriggan. As Eileen approaches her 37th birthday, the couple have hopes of starting a family together.

There is something that is standing in her way currently, as she believes she is suffering from a condition called ‘fibromyalgia’, something that causes widespread pain and tiredness. While Peter is slim, he admits that up until recently he had a bit of a problem with alcohol - and he is also a smoker.

Enter the doctors, who stalk, screen and assess them for a week - and bring the couple into the consultation room to hear their results.

With Eileen’s condition of fibromyalgia confirmed, she finds out that her cholesterol is very high, and she is verging on obese - and that she is at risk of developing diabetes.

Meanwhile Peter is told to cease drinking alcohol, quit smoking and to see a cardiologist as a previous ECG gave the doctors cause for concern for his heart.

At the end of the 8 weeks they are re-tested… What will the change in their lifestyle have made to their long term health?

DRAMA: Intruders (BBC2, 9pm)

When the first episode of this supernatural thriller aired a few weeks ago, many viewers were unsure what was most unsettling – the general air of doom, the challenge of working out what exactly was going on, or John Simm’s American accent.

But now we’ve had a chance to adjust, we’re starting to be gripped by this tale of former LA cop Jack Whelan (Simm) and his quest to find out what really happened to his wife Amy (Mira Sorvino).

This week, it looks like the detective (and the audience) may start to get some answers as Gary confesses he’s a lot more clued up on Bill Anderson’s murder and research than he previously admitted – and then reveals a startling connection between Amy and Rose.

Meanwhile, Madison begins making sense of Marcus’s memories, and Frank grows more concerned over Richard, but could soon have some even bigger worries.

DRAMA: The Fall (RTÉ One, 9.30pm)

The series is set in Northern Ireland and follows a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) investigation into a string of recent murders.

As Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) drives Rose Stagg (Valene Kane) away from her home in the middle of the night, her worst fears are realised when Spector tells her that he knows she went to the police.

With Rose missing, the pressure being brought to bear on the police investigation increases.

Gibson (Gillian Anderson) is forced to face the fact that her words have tipped Spector off about Rose, making her even more desperate to save Rose and catch the killer.

COMEDY: Some Girls (BBC3, 10pm)

When it started, some critics may have been tempted to dismiss this sitcom as a particularly blatant attempt to make a female Inbetweeners.

But as Viva, Holli, Amber and Saz return for a third series, it’s clear they are very much their own girls. While we don’t necessarily see a spin-off movie in their futures, there is plenty in store for them in this run including their first music festival, the prom and the prospect of leaving school.

For Rocky, the end of term can’t come soon enough, as he confides in Viva that he’s about to drop out, leaving her desperate to persuade him it’s not a good idea. However, he’s about to drop another bombshell.

Meanwhile, Amber is more concerned about Brandon, who has disappeared, and Holli as secret of her own as she squirrels money away for a mysterious project.
