Michael: 'I had to write about my ordeal'
27/05/2006 - 15:30:07George Michael's new song An Easier Affair was inspired by the furore surrounding him after he was discovered slumped in his car in central London earlier this year.
The track popped into his head at the time of the ordeal, during which he was cautioned for possession of cannabis.
Michael initially promised not to write a song about the incident, as a jokey reference to his hit song Outside, which referred to his conviction for lewd behaviour in a Los Angeles toilet in 1998.
But he eventually gave in to temptation and recorded it, as the subject matter was of such "resonance" to him. The track is dedicated to his female fans who didn't suspect he was gay until he came out in 1998.
He says: "Literally this track came to me the day after I realised what a huge deal the whole business about Hyde Park Corner was.
''I was getting such a kicking, I suddenly woke up and was like, 'Yes, I've got an idea.'
''I'm thinking of giving the police part of my publishing, actually.
"My life is very extreme in certain ways so it's much easier to write about things that might have some kind of resonance.''
