Stiller stars in knockabout 70’s satire

30/07/2004 - 18:40:29
Starsky and Hutch stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as Dave Starsky and as Ken Hutchinson, two undercover cops who like to do things their own way.

Starsky is more your by-the-book type, while Hutch views rules and regulations as general guidelines.

With a little help from their reliable snitch Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg) they cruise the streets in their red sports car bringing some law and order, and a sprinkling of mayhem, to proceedings.

Their main target is drug kingpin Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn), who has come up with a clever way of making cocaine that’s just as good as the real thing, but undetectable to sniffer dogs.

The plot isn’t really all that important, it’s just an excuse for Stiller and Wilson to poke fun at the ‘70s cult TV series.

The satire is clever and not too over the top, so even the most diehard fans of the original series won’t take offence.

It’s also a good excuse to enjoy some memorable ’70s pop classics without appearing too old fashioned.

Stiller and Wilson look like they really had fun making this one. Stiller as always overacts, it seems to be a kind of trademark now, but Snoop Dogg steals the show as their snitch. The guy was born to dress like a pimp.

There’s even cameo appearances from Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul, the original Starsky and Hutch pairing.

I rented this one with very low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised.

Comedy, 15. 3/5.
