Gates' record label denies it's dropping him
British pop star Gareth Gates' record label has rubbished reports it has dropped the singer and confirms he is currently in the studio working on new material.
BMG has defended the Pop Idol runner-up, 19, amid reports bosses have axed him after disappointing record sales in the UK.
A statement from BMG states, "We have not dropped Gareth Gates. He is currently in the studio."
But Charlotte Church's former agent Johnathan Shalit says: "I think Gareth Gates is past his sell-by-date.
"He comes off a television show that is about making stars, but with the publicity the act gets saturated with quickly.
"Gareth hasn't evolved as an act, whereas Will Young has shown he has a real talent and he had other sides to him.
"He is one-dimensional and once the kids get tired of that they move on.
"I don't even think it is because he has partied too hard - you can party and be a success."
