Fry: I could have been American
Quintessentially English actor and comedian Stephen Fry would have been an American citizen, had his father taken up a job offer in the US before he was born.
The Wilde star confesses he is grateful his father objected to the idea of raising Fry and his brother and sister American.
He says: "I'm so lucky to be English because I could have been American.
"He turned it down even though it was prestigious, on the grounds that he didn't want his children to be American."
But Fry admits he is intrigued as to how different he would be: "I would be identical but I would talk with an American accent and have American frames of reference, culture and so on.
"It makes me wonder about identity. Genetically I'd be the same. I assume I'd be gay and have interested in similar things but I couldn't know for certain. I could have been a disaster."
