‘The Soloist’ full of compassion and humanity

It is strange that this film has garnered such disappointing reviews, possibly because there
is no wild and violent action to be found, no constant stream of foul language, no unrelenting
sex.

This is based on a true story in which Downey Jnr plays Los Angeles journalist Steve Lopez,
desperately in need of a good story, who meets and begins writing about a troubled Skid Row
musician, Nat Ayers (Foxx), whose classically-trained playing of the cello is quite
astonishing.

Over a series of highly-regarded articles, Lopez discovers just how horrible it can be for the
city’s down-and-outs and tries to help them … with mixed results.

It is a film of compassion and humanity and doesn’t deserve to be dismissed quite so lightly.
It may have the look of a project aimed squarely at the Oscars, but what’s so wrong with that?
