Keith Duffy says ‘Coronation Street’ helped him cope with death of Stephen Gately.

The Boyzone singer was devastated when his bandmate died suddenly last October and says he thought he’d never get over the pain until he reprised his role as Ciaran McCarthy in the ITV1 soap.

Speaking about his bandmates’, he told new! magazine: “It’s different for all of us, and we all have our own way of dealing with it. Right now, it’s not as difficult as it was four weeks ago. It kind of gets easier, but you don’t get over it, you learn how to deal with it. And the busier we are, the more opportunity we have for a break from the grieving process, which helps you get better. But then, when you least expect it, a wave of emotion comes over you and completely annihilates you and you cry your eyes out.

“I was very bad for five weeks after he passed. I couldn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t feel like the grieving process was progressing. I felt stuck. And then I started back at ‘Coronation Street’, which helped bring me out of it. It’s still difficult. You can focus on what you need to on a day-to-day basis.”

Keith returned to ‘Coronation Street’ last month and his Irish alter-ego is set to manage Peter Barlow’s new wine bar.
