Strongly dramatic tale of a hippy dad (Day-Lewis) who begins to harbour impure thoughts about his teenage daughter (Belle).
His solution is to invite girlfriend (Keener) and her sons to live with him. Daughter considers this a betrayal and sets about wrecking an already ropey family set-up.
While it has a lot going for it, writer-director Miller’s story can’t quite decide which direction to take … is it this, or that, or not quite anything.
The acting carries it well beyond the basic concept and it emerges as a worthwhile rites-of-passage drama.
