Corrie's Izzy set to fall pregnant

Coronation Street's disabled character Izzy Armstrong is to become pregnant.

Wheelchair-bound Izzy - played by Cherylee Houston - will discover she is pregnant with boyfriend Gary Windass' baby in a ground breaking storyline for the TV3 soap, and TV executives are concerned with making the plot as realistic as possible.

A 'Coronation Street' insider told The Mirror newspaper: "'Corrie' has never shied away from tackling sensitive storylines. In recent times they have had the teenage lesbian love affair between Sian Powers and Sophie Webster, Sean Tully and Marcus Dent's gay marriage, Lesley Kershaw's Alzheimer's and Carla Connor's rape.

"With all those plot lines producers have researched the relevant topics to make sure it is presented accurately and they will do the same with Izzy's pregnancy.

"They will make sure they establish exactly what complications could occur during the pregnancy and how likely it is the baby could inherit Izzy's condition."

The 37-year-old actress suffers from the same condition as her on-screen alter-ego - a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome - and has been wheelchair bound since the age of 23.

TV executives are conducting thorough research, including speaking to sufferers who have had children, to ensure the storyline is as realistic as possible.

The source added: "It is very clear that this is a sensitive subject and it will be treated as such.

"Cherylee is absolutely thrilled that she is being allowed to take on such a challenging plot."

The storyline will see Izzy worrying the baby will inherit her condition. Former soldier Gary will tell factory worker Izzy that he is not ready to become a father, but she will insist upon looking after the child herself despite falling ill.
