Career dip pushed McConaughey into rom coms13/05/2012 - 15:19:21
Matthew McConaughey has said he got into romantic comedies at a time when his career had cooled off after shooting 'A Time To Kill'.
The 42-year-old actor is famed for appearing in films such as 'How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days' and 'Fool's Gold' and thinks there is a careful balance needed to get the formula for such movies right.
He said: "'How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days' is where I really started to learn how to do a romantic comedy. It's so much about the verbal ping-pong.
"Romantic comedies are like a ship sailing on top of the water. If you dig too deep and you drop your anchor, you f***ing sink."
Matthew admitted he took his first romantic lead, in 2001's 'The Wedding Planner', because his career had "cooled off" and he was surprised at how much fun he had on the film.
He told Total Film magazine: "My career had cooled off at that time. 'A Time To Kill' was such a ka-boom, the stock had to go down.
"I was like, 'Well look at this. This is kind of funny, and buoyant. It's not really who I am, but jeez, there's nothing wrong with it and guess what - the pay is sure good!' "
