Band Aid recording getting underway
The cream the music industry today started to gather for their re-recording of ’Do They Know It’s Christmas?’
Midge Ure, who wrote the original Band Aid single with Bob Geldof 20 years ago, was among the first to arrive.
Speaking outside the north London recording studio, the former Ultravox front man said it was “fantastic” that the song was to be re-made for charity two decades later.
He said: “It is great. The whole thing is still buzzing. It was a different world back then. Last time round I was behind the mixing desk for 24 hours. This time I am just hanging out.”
Midge Ure said Bono (pictured), Dido and Robbie Williams had already recorded vocals for the song separately, while Paul McCartney had recorded a bass section.
Asked whether he would be singing on this year’s version, called Band Aid 20, Ure joked: “I don’t know if they will let me. I will be in the chorus with everybody else I think.”
Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Justin Hawkins from The Darkness, Keane and R&B star Ms Dynamite are some of the acts collaborating in the Christmas single.
The original line up 20 years ago included acts such as U2, Bananarama, George Michael and Duran Duran.
