It’s Rome in the 1960s and three young criminals — Lebanese (Pier Francesco Favino), Ice (Kim Rossi Stuart) and Dandy (Claudio Santamaria) — decide to step up a class.

Pretty quickly they turn into a ruthless well organised gang who take over the local drugs trade. But their ambitions don’t end there.

As the decades slip by in Romanzo Criminale (Icon, €24.99), they become enmeshed in the unfolding corrupting political and terrorist quagmire and pretty soon it’s hard to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys.

This is a fast-paced highly entertaining film that’s a cut above the usual.

Thriller

Star Rating: 4/5.
