Collection showcases independent director

A boxset worth investing in is the John Sayles Collection (Optimum, €44.99), a triple bill showcasing the talents of one of America’s finest independent directors.

Return of the Secaucus Sven is a convincing drama based on a classroom reunion, Lianna examines a lesbian relationship but deftly avoids the usual voyeuristic clichés, while Brother From Another Planet is best described as an African-American sci-fi allegory in which a fleeing black slave finds himself in Harlem.

Always highly-watchable, Sayles takes normal situations and invests the characters with great depth.
