McWilliams calls for referendum on bank debt
A leading economist said today that the incoming Government should call a referendum to allow the people to have their say on the country's bank debt.
David McWilliams said that our politicians are scared of the issue, which he believes has now become "too big".
He said that we should follow in the footsteps of Iceland, and seek a public mandate on it.
"We need to use article 27 of the constitution which allows us to have a referendum, not to change the constitution, but to insert something new into the constitution, to have a referendum to mandate the people democratically to see: 'Do we want to go on paying this huge bank debt?'," he said.
"This is exactly what Iceland did, and only through a referendum do we give politicians the courage, the permission, to act on our behalf."
