Aspiring Australian rugby player David Andjelz is a bit nuts.
The wannabe rugby league star from the University of Western Sydney wants to earn a spot on Channel 9's NRL Rookie reality TV show.
So while his opponents showed off their bench-pressing, he set out to prove he's as tough as bricks. Literally.
"I love footie and playin' footie. I woke up this morning and saw all the videos of NRLRookie. I thought to myself: all these people lifting weights, what's that got to do with the footie field?" he said.
"Yeah, it makes you better physically, but it's what here [points to heart] that counts, and what's up here [points to head], your mentality, that counts.
"Eat weetabix, run through the bricks, if you lift weights, you make no breaks," he concluded.
The TV show is part of the NRL recruitment search for fresh talent. Anyone selected will end up living together in Sydney while they take part in a training programme designed to bring them up to professional level - with player contract as the ultimate prize.
The application site states that "Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have the required physical attributes and sporting prowess."
Andjelz might have proved he has the creative thinking area covered.
In an interview later with Triple M radio in Australia, he said he'd sent in his application form and where they asked for additional video, he "thought outside the box."
"I got up and felt all right. There were a couple of cuts, I was bleeding, but everything was pretty decent … I was expecting to be much worse off."
"It was just entertainment and exposure," he said, making clear he knows it's all just window dressing. Now, he hopes he'll get a trial game and a chance to impress the judges with real skills.
One thing's for sure - if he ever makes it professionally, he won't have much trouble selling himself to sponsors.
