An exploding manhole cover dramatically interrupted the recording of a news broadcast in New York yesterday.
An electrical fault caused an underground fire at Tupper Street in Buffalo, New York - resulting in the evacuation of several buildings.
As WRGZ photojournalist Dave Harrington interviewed witnesses on the scene for his news package, there was a loud explosion , sending a manhole cover rocketing skyward.
Manhole covers vary in weight, but as lumps of iron, it is likely the manhole cover in the video weighed more than 200kg. The force of the explosion sent it higher than the surrounding buildings, as fire crew and spectators took cover.
WGRZ reports the fire started at approximately 11.30am, and fire crews reported the scene under control by 2.30pm.
