Three criticised for suggesting Irish customer translate her name to English

Phone company Three have been criticised for suggesting that one of their users translate her name to English in order to use their online services.

A customer took to Twitter to express her anger after being told her surname 'Ní Cathail' wasn't valid.

Three Ireland suggested online that she translate her name to the English 'Cahill', which drew the ire of many users.

"Hey Caoimhe, have you tried entering your name in English? Is the translation Caoimhe Cahill?"

The company have apologised for the slip and say they'll see if the issue can be rectified.

Caoimhe says she was shocked by Three's first response: "My name is in Irish, I use it everyday in Irish, I haven't used it in English since I was maybe ten or 11 years old."
