The weather is going to be pretty bad this bank holiday weekend

After a weekend of politics, celebrations and commiserations in the Dublin sunshine, we all settled back into a regular Monday morning, looking forward to the bank holiday weekend ahead.

Until we checked the weather forecast from our expert meteorologists.

Summer officially begins next Monday, so we were looking forward to a sunny session in the beer garden. No such luck.

Friday will be "a chilly, breezy and unsettled day with widespread showers" apparently, "with thunder possible."

Oh. Well, at least Saturday will be good. It says there will be fine start to the day!

"— cloud will increase from the west. Rain arriving in western areas."

Curses. Still, Sunday! Sunday, the last day of May! Practically high summer!

"... early rain in eastern areas will quickly clear to leave sunny spells and scattered showers."

Sigh. We'll take what we can get. Let's double-check with Met Éireann's own website, just to be sure -

"Overnight into Bank Holiday Monday there are signs that it will become rather windy and wet ... during Monday, the rain will clear to showers but it will stay quite windy, with temperatures much lower than normal everywhere."

For feck's sake, Ireland. It's the first day of real, proper, scientific summer and you're talking about frost and rain and wind. We might as well pack it in and add some ice to the —

... showers will die out on Friday night, winds will ease and it may become cold enough for slight grass frost to occur.

Right. That's that, so. Time to look up flights to Santorini.

Of course, this is a long-range broadcast, which are about as reliable as the national football team's scoring ability.

Here's hoping it's as wrong as can be.
