The sports pundit who said that the Irish Olympic team should compete for Great Britain has made another Ireland-related gaffe.
ESPN presenter Russell Barwick was commentating on Ireland’s clash with France last Saturday, when he identified President Michael D Higgins as Taoiseach “Edna” Kenny.
One quick Google search later and the error was corrected – sort of.
“No, in fact, it's not,” said Barwick. “It must be, eh, someone else because I've just googled Edna Kenny and he's about 40 years younger than that bloke.”
At least Enda can be grateful for that – President Higgins is aged 71, which would put the Taoiseach at a relatively spritely 31.
The truculent pundit ruffled a few feathers amongst the Irish community in Australia during last summer’s Olympics when he compared that Irish athletes not competing for Team GB to “a Hawaiian surfer not surfing for the USA”.
