Comedian, actor and writer Richard Ayoade - who you might now as Chris O'Dowd's best friend in cult comedy The IT Crowd - used a recent promotional interview on Channel 4 to, er, completely dismantle the idea of the promotional interview.
Interviewer Krishnan Guru-Murthy leads off asking about the book's title, Ayoade on Ayoade, to be told: "The book's a comic book about film, really - it's not a book about the deconstruction of the idea of interviews. Particularly."
This interview, however, is almost exactly that - a four-minute oddball chat about the nonsense that is the press interview.
"You know what happens now," Guru-Murthy says, and the pair step through the motions with Ayoade derailing the interview, turning it back on Guru-Murthy and bringing up the famous explosive interview with Quentin Tarantino where the director shouted: "I'm shutting your butt down!"
Ayoade's complete disdain for the formula of a press interview has served its purpose in generating publicity for his new book, as the interview clip published by Channel 4 has clocked up almost half a million views in the last few days.
Any interview which finished with the subject saying "Don't thank me, I've done
for you" is bound to be worth watching.
