'Optimistic' art thief bungles attempt to hide painting

The painting is two feet wide by one foot long. The hoodie’s exact dimensions are unknown, but it’s not big enough for this attempted concealment job.

'Optimistic' art thief bungles attempt to hide painting

This hapless thief’s ‘ah, feck it’ moment was captured on CCTV after he tries and fails to conceal an artwork in his hoodie.

When that doesn't work out, he tries tucking it under his arm and walking out of the gallery. An ‘ah, feck it’ moment, if ever we saw one.

He doesn't get too far with it - staff stopped him outside, at which point he gave up the painting, and fled.

Birmingham Police have released CCTV footage of the attempted theft of the piece of wall art commemorating World War I from the city centre Castle Fine Art Gallery in a bid to identify the culprit.

In a delicately-worded statement, investigating officer PC Patrick Higgins said: "The thief was quite optimistic in his attempts to conceal the artwork, valued at several hundred pounds, but fortunately he made off empty handed.

“We are now keen to identify the man in the CCTV to prevent him from turning his attention to smaller objects."
