Last Friday was the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and, as the commemeration ceremonies were beginning in France, a 92-year-old British World War II veteran was being swindled out of his medals by a man who "spoke with an Irish accent".
The veteran had served with the Grenadier Guards in Italy and North Africa and also received medals for his work as a fireman. Two World War I medals that belonged to his father were also taken.
The Metropolitan Police said that the elderly man had opened the door of his home in Barnet to a man claiming to be from a water company. The man, who reportedly had an Irish accent, said he needed to check the water pressure and the pensioner allowed him in. He followed him to the kitchen and appeared to check the taps, before leaving.
Later that evening, the veteran noticed that his bedroom had been disturbed and discovered that the 11 war and service medals were missing. Nothing else is believed to have been taken.
The police in Barnet said officers from its Burglary Squad are investigating and released pictures of similiar lookng medals on their Twitter page.
Hopefully, the medals will be located soon and returned to their rightful owner.
