Ireland gets its first otter sign
Kildare County Council have installed the country's first otter sign.
The sign is to alert motorists that they are driving on a road that otters use frequently to cross between the Rye River and the Royal Canal in their search for food.
It was erected after requests from the public and under advice from the National Parks and Wildlife Service who have reported many otter deaths along the Kilcock to Maynooth Road over the past few years.
The elusive creatures like to move around at dusk and dawn which puts them in danger from passing motorists who may not see them in the fading light.
Otters are on the decline in Ireland with numbers hovering around the 12,000 mark at the moment and it's great to see the council do their bit in preserving the protected species.
