The week of the Galway Races is upon us and with it comes roguish antics and plenty of style.
It really should be made a national holiday – but until that glorious day comes, here is a round-up of the craic for those of us stuck at our desks.

Making a few bets
Trying your luck and chancing your gold and silver on a fine filly is all part of the occasion and if you are one of the few to make a return it makes the event even better.

The races are packed with chancers looking to make a few bob and a few savvy gamblers looking to increase their odds by picking up a few tips from the intellectual depository of the internet.

Honouring JT Mc Namara
The jockeys at the Galway Races led the crowds in a beautiful tribute to the late JT McNamara who lost his life yesterday.
The former jockey who was paralysed after a serious fall in Cheltenham in 2013, was remembered as a leading Irish amateur rider with over 600 career victories.

The Galway Races has always been an excuse to pull out the finery and dress up to the nines. In recent years it has become just as important to upload a photo to Instagram so those of us who couldn’t make the occasion can see how good everyone looks.
And of course an array of hats!

The craic looks mighty at the races this year - the weather might not be that best, but by the looks of these photos that has done little to dampen spirits.

And of course a few horses!
It is not called the Galway Races for nothing. For one week a range of races are held at the Galway racecourse with Ireland’s finest jockeys and horses competing with international talent to take home the top prizes. The rivalry is fierce, as is the comradery, and the suspense is exhilarating. As anyone who attends will tell you, it is well worth a visit if you can make it down to the city of tribes.
