Two men have been detained by French police after four kilos of cocaine and 200 grams of cannabis were found inside a car belonging to the 91-year-old Vatican librarian.
Now there's something you don't write everyday.
Argentinean cardinal Jorge Mejia - who retired in 2003 - is the emeritus librarian of the Holy See and is currently in hospital after suffering a heart attack.
According to French radio, the cardinal's secretary had given the official Vatican car to the two men to be serviced. The two Italians, aged 30 and 41, then drove the car to Spain to collect the drugs before driving it back to Italy. The pair are reported to have thought that the diplomatic license plates would protect them from a border search.
They were wrong.
Custom officials stopped the car at Chambéry in the French Alps on Sunday and discovered the haul.
The Vatican have released a statement confirming the incident but stressed that none of its staff were directly involved.
