In an emotional video released on Thursday, the world got a glimpse of what life is like for an Ebola patient in the US.
Nina Phan, 26, contracted the disease while treating Thomas Duncan - the first man diagnosed with Ebola in the US.
The short video shows Nina lying in a isolated hospital bed at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital with a health worker in a full protective suit at her side. While tearful, she seems in good spirits - even cracking a joke.
Her doctor, Dr. Gary Weinstein - also dressed in a hazmat suit - filmed the video and can be heard thanking Nina for helping to treat Duncan.
"Thanks for being part of the volunteer team to take care of our first patient... This has been a huge effort by all of you guys. We’re really proud of you”.
The doctor begins to get emotional as does Nina who can be heard telling the doctors not to cry. It ends with this touching exchange:
"I love you guys." "We love you Nina."
The video was released by the Presbyterian Hospital with permission from Ms. Pham.
Nina has been transferred to the National Institutes of Health Clinical Centre in Maryland for treatment in a specialised isolation unit.
