Last Saturday, Texas man Jimmy Montez took a call that he never thought would come.
Montez and his family were contacted by the Humane Society of North Texas to tell them that they’d found their terrier cross named Corky, who’d unbelievably been missing since late 2009.
Corky, who is now eight years old, managed to escape his outdoor kennel as a young pup and was never seen again. The family tried in vain to find the pooch for six months, even going door-to-door in their area and making flyers.
However, the family then moved home and had to give up all hope of finding their pet.
Amazingly, they were reunited last Saturday after Corky was found on the street in Fort Worth and his microchip led shelter employees back to the Montez family.
During his time on the streets Corky had befriended another stray, who staff named Captain due to the fact he was missing an eye.
With the bond between the dogs being quite evident, Jimmy felt he couldn’t separate the two and adopted Captain as well.
It’s been “so obvious they're best friends,” Jimmy told abcNews.
“It’s actually pretty adorable. It looks like Corky really took care of Captain when they were out in the streets.
“He always lets Captain eat first, and he’ll even stand guard to make sure none of our other dogs bother him.”
One can only imagine the adventures Corky and Captain got up to together.
