Apple maps 'discovers' Loch Ness Monster

Woah, Nessie.

Apple maps 'discovers' Loch Ness Monster

Apple's much-maligned mobile maps system now has a badge of honour to wear - it's sighted the Loch Ness Monster.

Take that, Google.

Following recent worry among the Loch Ness Fan Club that Nessie hadn't been sighted in over 18 months, club President Gary Campbell told The Daily Mail they've been considering a satellite image from Apple Maps as a sighting.

Two separate people noticed something odd when panning around Loch Ness on their mobiles - a large shape appearing just beneath the surface between Dores and Lairgmore.

Campbell, who keeps a register of the sightings, told the Mail they can't figure out what the shape is - it looks like the wake of a boat, only there's no boat.

"You can see some boats moored at the shore, but there isn’t one here. We’ve shown it to boat experts and they don’t know what it is," he said.

"Whatever this is, it is under the water and heading south, so unless there have been secret submarine trials going on in the loch, the size of the object would make it likely to be Nessie."

So … is it the Loch Ness Monster? Well, considering the most famous photograph, from 1934, is a well-known fake - no, probably not. If it is we'll eat our hat.

Still, if you're tempted to pull out an iOS device to try and find it yourself, here's the location. But it may only appear on certain versions of the app - the images refresh with satellite data on occasion.
