Rodrigo Abd from Argentina, won first prize in the "General News Single" category showing a woman called Aida after her house was shelled by the Syrian Army in March last year. Her husband and two children were killed during the shelling in Idib.
Mirella, 71, cares for her husband Luigi who has had Alzheimer's for the last six years.
Fausto Podavini took this photo in Italy in June 2012 which earned him first prize in the "Daily Life Stories" category.
The Somali basketball association pays armed guards to watch over and protect Suweys and her team when they play in Mogadishu in February last year.
Young women risk their lives playing the game in the war-torn capital and 19-year-old Suweys and her friends have received many death threats from not only al-Shabaab militias and radical Islamists, but some male members of their own families.
"I just want to dunk," Suweys told Jan Grarup the photographer who got top prize in the "Sports Features" category. "Basketball makes me forget all my problems."
A jockey, his feet strapped into a harness attached to two bulls and clutching their tails, shows relief and joy at the end of a run across rice fields.
Wei Seng Chen from Malaysia came top in the "Sports Action" category for this snap from February 2012 during the Pacu Jawi (bull race), a competition at the end of harvest season contested between villages in Indonesia.
Beaten to second prize in the same category was Sergei Ilnitsky of Russia, who took whis during the London Olympics last year.
The 2013 World Press Photo of the year went to Paul Hansen of Sweden, for the Swedish paper Dagens Nyheter.
It shows two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and her three-year-old brother Muhammad who were killed when their house was destroyed by an Israeli missile strike last November. Their father, Fouad, was also killed and their mother was put in intensive care.
Fouad's brothers carry his children to the mosque for the burial ceremony as his body is carried behind on a stretcher in Gaza City.
