Wolfowitz canvasses for World Bank appointment

Paul Wolfowitz is meeting World Bank executives representing developing countries as he tries to cement support for his nomination by US president George Bush to take over the helm of the development bank.

A group of executive directors, including representatives of Brazil and India, met Wolfowitz this week and spoke of the importance of reducing poverty and improving health and education, the bank said.

The selection of Wolfowitz, an architect of the Iraq war, to head the 184-nation World Bank has drawn criticism, especially from some international aid and other groups.

They question his development credentials and worry that he would try to use the development bank to help the United States’ friends and punish its enemies.
